What you’re working towards

Make a short original story with a clear choice, consequence and ending. The worked result was written for this guide; it is not a recording of an AI run.

Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Open a text assistant and try the example

For a concrete starter route, open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Sign in if that service requires it for your access. You can also use another text assistant you already have. Copy the entire prompt below (the instructions to paste), including the sample input, into its message box and send it. No upload or image generation is needed. Expect one titled story of 140–190 words. The wording may differ from the example; the constraints should not. If it only explains the task, ask it to produce the finished result using the supplied input.

Your starting prompt
Write an original story of 140–190 words, excluding its title. Use third-person past tense: refer to Ada as “Ada” or “she” and describe events as having happened. Include a beginning, a choice that changes something, and a closed ending. Do not append an explanation.

Use this complete made-up practice input:
Premise: A city librarian named Ada finds a seed inside a returned atlas.
Setting: An invented town where the library has a small empty courtyard.
Required objects: a seed, a penciled map, a chipped blue cup.
Conflict: Ada can file the seed as a lost object or plant it in the courtyard.
Ending: She plants it; an ordinary seedling appears after several weeks.
Tone: Warm, understated. No magic, no dialogue, no new characters. Do not identify the plant species.

Return the finished result. Keep it fictional and do not add claims about real people, products or events.

Check, correct and save

Read the response beside the original input. Count 140–190 story words, excluding the title. Find the seed, penciled map and chipped blue cup. Check that Ada chooses to plant and that the ordinary seedling appears only after several weeks. Confirm there is no dialogue, magic or additional character. If a check fails, paste the correction prompt below in the same conversation. Check the revised result yourself, then copy the version you want into your own notes or document.

Your starting prompt
Check your previous result against this original input:
Premise: A city librarian named Ada finds a seed inside a returned atlas.
Setting: An invented town where the library has a small empty courtyard.
Required objects: a seed, a penciled map, a chipped blue cup.
Conflict: Ada can file the seed as a lost object or plant it in the courtyard.
Ending: She plants it; an ordinary seedling appears after several weeks.
Tone: Warm, understated. No magic, no dialogue, no new characters. Do not identify the plant species.

Check these requirements one by one:
- Count 140–190 story words, excluding the title.
- Find the seed, penciled map and chipped blue cup.
- Check that Ada chooses to plant and that the ordinary seedling appears only after several weeks.
- Confirm there is no dialogue, magic or additional character.
Quote each problem, explain the smallest repair, and return a complete corrected version. If there is no problem, say which checks you applied. Do not claim that your own review proves quality or audience response.

Optional: use your own material

Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below and replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with characters, setting, required objects, story choice and ending limits. Use material you own or may use and leave out private details. The output limits written in this prompt stay in force; change a limit here too if you want a different one. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of written result with your new material. Check it against this new input and these limits, not the sample’s names or numbers. If it differs, describe the exact mismatch and ask for a complete correction before saving.

Your starting prompt
Write an original fictional story of 140–190 words, excluding the title. Use third-person past tense, a beginning, a choice that changes something and a closed ending. Follow my new story facts and exclusions below; do not append an explanation.

If an essential detail is missing or two requirements conflict, ask me before filling the gap.

Optional: improve the result

Try a different emotional emphasis

Ask for a second version that changes the emotional emphasis while preserving every event. Keep the first version so you can compare the change. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.

Advanced prompt
Rewrite the story with a more quietly humorous narrator. Keep the same sequence, objects, ending, word range and no-dialogue rule. Then identify two wording choices that changed the tone.
Use the original input and result in this conversation. If either is missing, ask me to paste it before continuing.

The Unmapped Place

Ada found the seed caught in the spine of a returned atlas. It was small enough to mistake for a crumb. A penciled map tucked between the pages showed a circle around one otherwise blank square.

The circle marked the library courtyard. Ada checked through the window. Beyond the glass stood an empty square of earth and the chipped blue cup she used to carry water.

She opened the lost-property ledger. There was room for a description, a date, and a shelf number. There was no space for what an object might become.

For a while, she held the seed above the page. Then she closed the ledger, took the cup outside, and made a shallow hollow with her thumb. She covered the seed and watered the patch.

For several weeks, nothing interrupted the brown surface. Ada watered when it dried. One morning, a green loop lifted a grain of soil. She brought the atlas to the window and added a tiny leaf to the map.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • A surprising ending can become an unexplained miracle. Keep the change small and consistent with the no-magic rule.
  • A premise alone is not a finished story. Look for Ada taking an action and a consequence after it.
