What you’re working towards

Build a character sheet that connects a desire, fear and difficult choice. The worked result was written for this guide; it is not a recording of an AI run.

Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Open a text assistant and try the example

For a concrete starter route, open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Sign in if that service requires it for your access. You can also use another text assistant you already have. Copy the entire prompt below (the instructions to paste), including the sample input, into its message box and send it. No upload or image generation is needed. Expect six labeled sections and one 80–120-word scene. The wording may differ from the example; the constraints should not. If it only explains the task, ask it to produce the finished result using the supplied input.

Your starting prompt
Create a compact character sheet with six labeled sections: Want, Fear, Contradiction, Visible habit, Pressure test, and Decision. Use specific actions rather than personality adjectives. Include one 80–120-word scene showing the decision.

Use this complete made-up practice input:
Character: Eren, an adult repairer of mechanical clocks in an invented town.
Want: Win the town's annual craft display.
Fear: Being known as someone who needs help.
Contradiction: Patient with damaged objects, impatient with people who hesitate.
Situation: On display morning, the only working replacement gear belongs to rival repairer Sol, who has offered to lend it with no conditions.
Boundaries: Eren must ask for the gear, credit Sol on the display card, and still not know whether the entry wins. No romance or villain.

Return the finished result. Keep it fictional and do not add claims about real people, products or events.
02

Check, correct and save

Read the response beside the original input. Find all six labeled sections and a separate scene. Check that asking and giving credit happen visibly in the scene. Confirm the winner is left unknown and Sol has no hidden conditions. If a check fails, paste the correction prompt below in the same conversation. Check the revised result yourself, then copy the version you want into your own notes or document. Count 80–120 words in the scene, excluding the six-section sheet.

Your starting prompt
Check your previous result against this original input:
Character: Eren, an adult repairer of mechanical clocks in an invented town.
Want: Win the town's annual craft display.
Fear: Being known as someone who needs help.
Contradiction: Patient with damaged objects, impatient with people who hesitate.
Situation: On display morning, the only working replacement gear belongs to rival repairer Sol, who has offered to lend it with no conditions.
Boundaries: Eren must ask for the gear, credit Sol on the display card, and still not know whether the entry wins. No romance or villain.

Check these requirements one by one:
- Find all six labeled sections and a separate scene.
- Check that asking and giving credit happen visibly in the scene.
- Confirm the winner is left unknown and Sol has no hidden conditions.
Quote each problem, explain the smallest repair, and return a complete corrected version. If there is no problem, say which checks you applied. Do not claim that your own review proves quality or audience response.
Count 80–120 words in the scene, excluding the six-section sheet.

Optional: use your own material

Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below and replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with character facts, situation, pressures and exclusions. Use material you own or may use and leave out private details. The output limits written in this prompt stay in force; change a limit here too if you want a different one. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of written result with your new material. Check it against this new input and these limits, not the sample’s names or numbers. If it differs, describe the exact mismatch and ask for a complete correction before saving.

Your starting prompt
Create a compact fictional character sheet with Want, Fear, Contradiction, Visible habit, Pressure test, and Decision. Use specific actions rather than personality adjectives. Add an 80–120-word scene showing the decision, excluding the sheet from that count. Preserve my new constraints below.

If an essential detail is missing or two requirements conflict, ask me before filling the gap.

MY INPUT

Optional: improve the result

Test the character in a different situation

Use a new pressure test to see whether the sheet creates consistent but varied behavior. Keep the first version so you can compare the change. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.

Advanced prompt
Create a second situation in which Eren must wait for an inexperienced adult to explain a problem. Write two possible choices, their costs and which best fits the existing contradiction. Do not repeat the gear incident.
Use the original input and result in this conversation. If either is missing, ask me to paste it before continuing.
Show, then try

The intended result

Illustrative output
Worked example written for this guide; it is not a recording of an AI run.

Want: Eren wants visitors to stop at the clock he rebuilt and choose it for the annual craft display prize.
Fear: Asking for help feels, to him, like admitting that the clock is not truly his work.
Contradiction: He will adjust one bent tooth for an hour, yet finish another person's sentence when they hesitate.
Visible habit: He smooths his blank display card whenever someone approaches.
Pressure test: Sol's offered gear would make the clock run; refusing it would protect Eren's pride and leave the hands still.
Decision: He asks for the loan and adds Sol's name to the card. The prize remains undecided.

Scene:
Eren had polished the clock twice. Its hands still pointed to six. Across the hall, Sol waited beside a small paper packet.

Eren opened his mouth, then inspected a screw that did not need inspecting. Sol said nothing. The silence made room for a whole request.

“May I borrow that gear?” Eren asked.

He fitted it slowly. When the first tick sounded, he reached for his display card. Below his own name, he wrote, “Replacement gear lent by Sol.”

The judges had not arrived. Eren left the card where everyone could read it.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • An adjective list does not explain behavior. Ask which choice the motive changes.
  • Do not solve the fear instantly. A small action can move the character forward without rewriting their personality.
