Check a calculation by following its units

A calculation that shows which units cancel and why mass cannot be added to length.

What you’re working towards

A step-by-step dimensional calculation showing which units cancel, with incompatible quantities rejected. This is an authored practice example; no consumer AI run or real participant trial has been recorded.

Make a start

One step at a time.

2 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Try the complete example

Open a new chat in a text AI assistant you already have permission to use. Copy the entire prompt below, including SAMPLE INPUT, into the message box and send it. No upload or special tool is needed. Expect a calculation that shows which units cancel and why mass cannot be added to length. Compare the result with Input; Output is a worked illustration, not text you need to paste. 3 × 250 = 750 cm; 750 ÷ 100 = 7.5 m. Cross out pack and cm on opposite sides of the multiplication; m is the final unit. The 40 g is kept separate and 750 m is identified as a relabeling error. If a detail differs, paste: “This part is wrong: [quote it]. My input says: [quote the exact source line or rule]. Return a complete corrected replacement and explain the change.” Recheck it yourself. If the source is missing or contradictory, leave that part unresolved and obtain the needed fact before using it.

Your starting prompt
Solve Q1 by writing every number with its unit and using F1 in the direction that leaves metres. Explain the cancelling units in ordinary words, independently show the arithmetic, repair the deliberate 750 m draft and keep Q2 separate.

SAMPLE INPUT
Original synthetic practice input. The people, organizations, records and events below are fictional.

Q1. Ribbon: 3 packs, with exactly 250 cm of ribbon per pack. Find the total ribbon length in metres.
F1. The only needed conversion is 100 cm = 1 m. A conversion factor can be written as 1 m / 100 cm because the numerator and denominator name the same length.
Q2. A separate supply note lists 40 g of glue. Grams measure mass; centimetres and metres measure length. Do not add glue mass to ribbon length.
Precision: display metres to one decimal place; these supplied quantities are exact for the exercise.
Deliberately wrong draft: “3 × 250 = 750, so there are 750 m.” Explain the unit error without judging a learner.

Return written text only. Keep this fictional and label illustrative dialogue as invented. Do not claim an actual interview, survey, learner trial or tool execution. Do not send, publish, collect responses or change another service.

Use your own input

Open a new chat. Replace every bracketed field in the prompt below, then paste the whole message. Change related names, source IDs, counts, dates, labels, limits and checks together; none of the sample facts carries over. Use only your own, authorized non-sensitive material. Expect the same kind of complete result using your inputs. Cross out cancelling units on paper and recompute the numbers with a calculator. Reverse the conversion where possible and compare with your original quantity.

Solve my ordinary nonregulated calculation by following units through each multiplication or division. Use only my supplied conversion factors and explain which units cancel. Show the arithmetic, requested final unit and rounding rule. Reject addition of incompatible quantities. If a conversion or relationship is missing, hold that part rather than inventing one. If I provide a draft calculation, identify and repair its unit error.

MY INPUT
Exact quantities and units: [replace with complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Approved conversion factors or relationships: [replace with complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Question and required final unit: [replace with complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Precision or rounding rule: [replace with complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Incompatible quantities and any draft calculation to check: [replace with complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]

Use only MY INPUT for facts, names, dates, counts and constraints. Ask about essential missing information or conflicting rules instead of guessing. Do not import any practice-example values. Return the complete requested result, unresolved questions and checks tied to my input. Do not send, publish, collect responses, buy, book or change another service.
Optional: improve the result

Test the direction of a conversion

Use a deliberately reversed conversion to see what the units reveal. This optional extension uses only the original synthetic sample. Return to the sample chat, or paste its complete Input into a new chat first. To use it with your own material, replace the source and every dependent rule, number and check explicitly.

Advanced prompt
For the original ribbon sample, inspect 750 cm × 100 cm/1 m. State its resulting unit and why it does not answer a question in metres. Then show the correct factor and answer. Do not treat 75,000 cm²/m as a ribbon length in metres.
Show, then try

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input

The intended result

Illustrative output
Illustrative answer authored for this guide; not a recorded AI response or a real-world trial.

Ribbon calculation
3 packs × 250 cm/pack = 750 cm.
750 cm × 1 m/100 cm = 7.5 m.
In one line: 3 packs × 250 cm/pack × 1 m/100 cm = 7.5 m.

Unit check
“packs” in the first amount cancels “pack” in cm/pack. Then “cm” cancels between 750 cm and the denominator 100 cm. Only m remains, matching the question.
Number check: 3 × 250 ÷ 100 = 7.5. The answer is already at one decimal place and is exact for the supplied exercise.

Repair the wrong draft
The multiplication 3 × 250 = 750 is correct, but the result is centimetres, not metres. Changing the label alone does not convert the quantity. Divide by 100 using F1 to obtain 7.5 m. Reverse check: 7.5 × 100 = 750 cm.

Keep Q2 separate
40 g of glue is a mass. It cannot be added to the ribbon length, and the input supplies no relationship converting glue mass into ribbon length. This does not say whether glue is needed for a craft; that is outside the calculation.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • Matching numbers with the wrong final unit is still a wrong answer.
  • Multiplying by a conversion factor in the wrong direction can leave squared units instead of the unit you need.
