Source files to work with

Make a start

One step at a time.

4 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Set up the worked example

Open

Open a new text-AI chat, a fraction-capable calculator and a plain-text viewer/editor. Download ingredient-source.md. This is an ingredient arithmetic exercise, not a cooking recipe. You can inspect the CSV as text; no spreadsheet account is needed. A fraction such as 3/4 has numerator 3 and denominator 4, meaning three parts out of four.

Add the sample

In step 1 replace [paste] with all of ingredient-source.md, matching ‘The starting point’ (Synthetic input), and [amount and unit] with ‘6 portions’. In step 2 paste the checked full source and target; in step 3 paste the original source and complete scaled list. Save the resulting worksheet as my-ingredient-scaling.txt and reopen it before step 4. Paste the unchanged source under SOURCE and the entire reopened worksheet under SCALED WORKSHEET. Send one step at a time and check each answer. Use ‘The intended result’ (Illustrative output), ingredient-scaling.csv and the answer download to compare after trying; the CSV is a static answer, not a recalculating workbook.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Preserve the source and check the yields

Download the source and checked worksheet. Record source and target yields separately, using the same unit. A missing or zero source yield stops the calculation; “to taste” is an unquantified source value.

Your starting prompt
Extract the source and target yields, units, every ingredient, exact original fraction and unquantified qualifier from this ingredient list. Assign or preserve stable source IDs. Require known positive yields with positive integer denominators and the same yield unit. If yield or unit information is missing or inconsistent, stop the scaling calculation and identify what is needed. Preserve method/time/temperature/cookware/storage notes unchanged for reference. Do not invent a recipe, density, cup standard or amount for an unquantified ingredient.

SOURCE:
[paste]

TARGET YIELD:
[amount and unit]
Expect

A source check retaining 4 portions, target 6 portions, six ingredient rows and all five unchanged missing-method notes.

Check

I01–I05 are 300 g flour, 200 mL milk, 3/4 cup sugar, 1 egg and 1/2 teaspoon spice. I06 is seasoning ‘to taste’, with no amount or unit. Both yields are positive and use portions; no cup standard or density is supplied.

If it differs

If an ingredient, fraction or unit changes, quote its source row and ask for correction. Unknown/zero yields or mismatched yield units stop scaling; ‘to taste’ must not become zero.

02

Apply the exact ratio to each known amount

Target yield divided by source yield gives the factor. For this fixture, 6/4 reduces to 3/2. Multiply rational pairs, reduce them and keep units unchanged. The downloaded CSV is a static checked answer rather than a recalculating workbook.

Your starting prompt
Calculate target yield divided by source yield as a reduced exact fraction. For every quantified ingredient, multiply the source numerator/denominator by that factor, reduce the result and show a readable mixed fraction. Return source ID, ingredient, original rational pair, unchanged unit, factor, exact result pair and display amount. Preserve each source row once and in order. Leave numeric fields blank for unquantified amounts and copy their qualifier. Do not use decimals as replacements for exact fractions, round quantities, convert mass/volume units or infer densities.

VALIDATED SOURCE AND TARGET:
[paste]
Expect

The exact factor 6/4 = 3/2, with one multiplication per quantified ingredient and unchanged units.

Check

Check with fractions: 300 × 3/2 = 450 g; 200 × 3/2 = 300 mL; 3/4 × 3/2 = 9/8 = 1 1/8 cup; 1 × 3/2 = 1 1/2 egg; 1/2 × 3/2 = 3/4 teaspoon. I06 stays unquantified with blank numeric fields.

If it differs

If decimals replace exact fractions, ask for reduced numerator/denominator pairs and matching mixed fractions. Do not add different units together or convert cups to grams without the missing source information.

03

Expose the decisions arithmetic cannot make

One egg becomes 1 1/2 egg mathematically. Keep that result visible and ask the cook to resolve it with a trusted appropriate recipe. Do not silently replace it with two eggs or invent handling instructions.

Your starting prompt
Review the exact scaled list for fractional count items and unquantified ingredients. Preserve each mathematical result and flag a decision still needed from the cook. Do not round, substitute, prescribe a way to divide an ingredient, or turn an unknown amount into zero. State which missing source facts prevent a conversion. Keep all cooking-method notes unchanged and do not scale time, temperature or cookware dimensions. Do not add nutrition, allergy, safety or cooking-outcome claims.

SOURCE AND EXACT SCALED LIST:
[paste]
Expect

A separate list of decisions arithmetic cannot make: the fractional egg and unquantified seasoning remain unresolved.

Check

The result stays 3/2 egg; it is not rounded to one or two. ‘To taste’ stays unchanged. Method, cooking time, temperature, cookware and storage notes remain verbatim as ‘not supplied’; none is multiplied.

If it differs

Remove automatic substitutions, handling instructions or invented quantities. Keep decisions separate from the mathematical answer. Save the complete worksheet and decision list under the fresh filename and reopen it before step 4.

04

Check every row independently

Recalculate using a fraction-capable calculator or independent checker. Verify units, numerator/denominator pairs and source IDs. Import display fractions as text if opening the CSV in spreadsheet software, since automatic type conversion can change them.

Your starting prompt
Independently audit the source and scaled worksheet. Recompute the ratio and each exact fraction, confirm every original unit and source row, and compare readable mixed fractions with numeric pairs. Test unit mismatches, rounding, zero/unknown source yield, omitted rows, an invented amount for “to taste” and an arbitrary replacement for a fractional egg. Report the arithmetic checks separately from any unperformed AI-service, spreadsheet-app or cooking tests. Keep unresolved cook decisions explicit.

SOURCE:
[paste]

SCALED WORKSHEET:
[paste]
Expect

A row-by-row audit of the actual saved worksheet, with exact arithmetic checked separately from cooking or application tests.

Check

Use your fraction calculator to check the factor and all five results. Every source ID and unit remains once, and unquantified fields are blank. If using a spreadsheet, import fraction displays as text and retain the numerator/denominator columns; automatic conversion may turn fractions into dates.

If it differs

For a mismatch, recalculate from the original source, save a corrected revision and reopen it to recheck. Treat proposed invalid-input tests as unperformed unless actually checked. No worksheet validates nutrition, allergies, safety, cooking method or outcome; unresolved cooking decisions need a trusted appropriate recipe.

Optional: improve the result

Keep revisions and cook decisions separate

A changed target yield needs a fresh exact calculation from the original source. Preserve the previous mathematical answer and record any later cooking decision separately.

Advanced prompt
Recalculate this ingredient worksheet for a new target yield using the unchanged original source, rather than rescaling a rounded previous output. Validate both yields and their units, derive a reduced rational factor and check each result independently. Produce a change log with source ID, prior exact amount, new exact amount and unchanged unit. Keep source method notes verbatim. Carry forward unquantified qualifiers and flag new fractional count items; do not overwrite mathematical results with a cook decision. If an authorized cook supplies a decision, record it in a separate decision field with its source, while making no claim that the recipe or method has been tested.

ORIGINAL SOURCE:

PRIOR WORKSHEET:
[paste]

NEW TARGET YIELD:
[paste]
Optional: use your own input

Check quantities from your own ingredient list

Use an ingredient list and reference notes you own or may use, without private health information. Open a fresh chat, plain-text editor and fraction calculator. Fill the prompt below. After its source check, send:
“Compute target yield divided by source yield as a reduced exact fraction. For each quantified ingredient show ID, original numerator/denominator, unchanged unit, factor, reduced result pair and readable mixed fraction. Preserve every row once and in order. Copy unquantified qualifiers with blank numeric fields. No rounding, automatic unit conversions or inferred densities.”
“List fractional count items and unquantified amounts that need a separate cook decision. Keep the exact arithmetic visible; do not round, substitute or prescribe ways to divide ingredients. State missing conversion information. Copy source method/time/temperature/cookware/storage notes unchanged and do not scale them. Add no nutrition, allergy, safety or outcome claim.”
Save the full worksheet, unchanged notes and open decisions as my-ingredient-scaling.txt using a fresh filename. If you also save CSV, retain exact numerator/denominator fields and import display fractions as text. Reopen the saved worksheet before continuing.
“Audit my original source and reopened worksheet below. Independently recompute every exact result and check IDs, unchanged units, qualifiers, display fractions and source notes. Identify zero/unknown/mismatched yields, missing rows, rounding, arbitrary partial-item replacements and invented unquantified amounts as failures. Separate actual arithmetic checks from proposed tests and unperformed spreadsheet/cooking tests. ORIGINAL SOURCE AND TARGET: [paste]. SAVED WORKSHEET: [paste complete reopened file].”
Use the fraction calculator yourself; when a result differs, return to the original amount and target/source ratio. Save and reopen corrections before repeating the check. A text viewer avoids automatic spreadsheet date conversion; if a spreadsheet changes a fraction, preserve the original and reopen/import a fresh copy correctly. Your source and yields determine every amount; sample answers do not apply. The original advanced prompt needs your own original source, prior exact worksheet and new target yield. This task never turns arithmetic into validated cooking instructions.

Your own-input prompt
Help me check ingredient-scaling arithmetic using MY SOURCE and MY TARGET. First extract every ingredient with a stable ID, original unit, exact fraction and any unquantified qualifier. Preserve source method, time, temperature, cookware and storage notes verbatim for reference. Validate known positive source and target yields, positive integer fraction denominators and the same yield unit/definition. Stop for missing, contradictory or invalid values rather than inventing them. Do not calculate until I check the extraction. Later we will multiply exact fractions, expose unresolved decisions and audit a saved worksheet. Do not round or substitute partial items, invent amounts/densities/cup standards, adapt a cooking method or make nutrition, allergy, safety or outcome claims.

MY SOURCE
[Paste your complete permitted ingredient list with exact amounts/fractions, units, unquantified qualifiers, source yield and its definition/unit. Include any source method/time/temperature/cookware/storage notes unchanged, or mark them not supplied.]

MY TARGET
[Give the desired positive yield with the same unit and definition as the source.]

Check your own result

  • Source and target yields are positive and compatible; the exact factor comes from your original yields.
  • Every ingredient appears once with its original unit and exact reduced result; readable fractions agree with numerator/denominator fields.
  • Unquantified qualifiers stay unquantified and partial-item decisions stay separate from the mathematical results.
  • The saved worksheet preserves source reference notes without adapting them; arithmetic does not establish cooking suitability or safety.

The starting point

Synthetic input
# Source: ingredient arithmetic fixture

Original fictional exercise ingredient-arithmetic-v1. These ingredient names and quantities exist to teach arithmetic. This is not a recommended or tested recipe.

Y01: Source yield: 4 portions. Y02: Target yield: 6 portions. The yield unit is the same in both fields.

| Source ID | Ingredient | Source amount | Unit | Exact numerator | Exact denominator |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| I01 | flour | 300 | g | 300 | 1 |
| I02 | milk | 200 | mL | 200 | 1 |
| I03 | sugar | 3/4 | cup | 3 | 4 |
| I04 | egg | 1 | egg | 1 | 1 |
| I05 | spice | 1/2 | teaspoon | 1 | 2 |
| I06 | seasoning | to taste | not supplied | not supplied | not supplied |

The source's unquantified seasoning is not zero. It has no numeric quantity and no supplied unit. Preserve “to taste” without inventing an amount. No cup standard or ingredient-specific density was supplied. Do not convert cups to grams or infer a cup volume.

## Source reference notes, to retain verbatim

Method: not supplied.
Cooking time: not supplied.
Cooking temperature: not supplied.
Cookware: not supplied.
Storage directions: not supplied.

The ingredient calculation does not fill in these missing notes. For a real task, keep source method notes unchanged for reference and have the cook resolve the method and awkward partial ingredients using a trusted appropriate recipe. Do not multiply times, temperatures or cookware dimensions. Do not infer nutrition, allergy, safety or cooking-outcome claims from this exercise.

Illustrative output
# Exact ingredient-scaling worksheet

Illustrative answer to the fictional arithmetic fixture. This is not a recommended, adapted or tested cooking recipe. No AI service or cooking session was run.

## Yield and factor

Source yield: 4 portions [Y01]. Target yield: 6 portions [Y02].

Scale factor = target / source = 6/4 = 3/2. The portion units cancel. Require known, positive source and target yields with the same yield unit before calculating.

## Checked quantities

| ID | Source | Exact multiplication | Scaled rational | Readable amount | Review |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| I01 | 300 g flour | (300/1) × (3/2) | 450/1 g | 450 g | Exact arithmetic only |
| I02 | 200 mL milk | (200/1) × (3/2) | 300/1 mL | 300 mL | Exact arithmetic only |
| I03 | 3/4 cup sugar | (3/4) × (3/2) | 9/8 cup | 1 1/8 cup | Cup standard remains unspecified |
| I04 | 1 egg | (1/1) × (3/2) | 3/2 egg | 1 1/2 egg | Fractional item; cook decision pending |
| I05 | 1/2 teaspoon spice | (1/2) × (3/2) | 3/4 teaspoon | 3/4 teaspoon | Exact arithmetic only |
| I06 | seasoning to taste | No numeric multiplication | Unquantified | to taste | Cook decision pending |

Keep original units. No rounding has been applied. Do not add quantities with different units into a meaningless total. A rational pair such as numerator 9 and denominator 8 is authoritative; the mixed fraction is a readable rendering, not a decimal approximation. CSV software may reinterpret fraction text as dates, so import scaled_amount as text and retain the numeric numerator/denominator fields. The CSV is a checked static worksheet, not a live recalculating spreadsheet.

## Two decisions remain open

- I04: The arithmetic returns 1 1/2 egg. No automatic replacement, rounding to 1 or 2 eggs, or egg-handling instruction is supplied. The cook must resolve this with a trusted appropriate recipe before treating the list as usable cooking instructions.
- I06: Seasoning stays “to taste,” with blank quantity numerator, denominator and unit. Blank here means unquantified, not zero. The cook still needs to resolve it.

No cup standard or ingredient-specific density was supplied. There is no justified cup-to-gram conversion. A different standard, substitution or portion definition requires new source information and a fresh calculation.

## Source reference notes, unchanged

Method: not supplied.
Cooking time: not supplied.
Cooking temperature: not supplied.
Cookware: not supplied.
Storage directions: not supplied.

These notes are retained as source reference, not adapted instructions. Ingredient scaling does not establish suitable times, temperatures, cookware, storage, nutrition, allergies, safety or an equivalent cooking outcome.

## Reuse and audit

1. Copy the blank worksheet and record source ID, source yield and unit, target yield and unit. Do not proceed with an unknown/zero source yield or mismatched yield units.
2. Transcribe each ingredient once with its original unit and exact fraction. Preserve unquantified qualifiers separately.
3. Reduce target/source to an exact factor. Multiply numerator by numerator and denominator by denominator, then reduce by their greatest common divisor. Keep the ingredient unit unchanged.
4. Render improper fractions as mixed fractions without rounding. Mark fractional count items and unquantified amounts for a cook's decision; do not replace them automatically.
5. Independently check each row against the source and answer key, then retain source method notes unchanged. Actual cooking and any AI workflow remain unperformed.

A few things to watch for.

  • Rounding 9/8 cup to a decimal or replacing 3/2 egg with two eggs without a separate decision.
  • Treating an unspecified seasoning amount as a numeric zero.
  • Converting cups to grams without a supplied cup standard and ingredient-specific basis.
  • Changing the definition of a portion while using the same numeric factor.
  • Multiplying cooking times or temperatures along with ingredients.
  • Letting a spreadsheet import turn fraction-display text into dates, or assuming this static CSV recalculates after edits.
