What you’re working towards

Create a small world rulebook that answers edge cases consistently. The worked result was written for this guide; it is not a recording of an AI run.

Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Open a text assistant and try the example

For a concrete starter route, open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Sign in if that service requires it for your access. You can also use another text assistant you already have. Copy the entire prompt below (the instructions to paste), including the sample input, into its message box and send it. No upload or image generation is needed. Expect five fictional rules and four explicit test results. The wording may differ from the example; the constraints should not. If it only explains the task, ask it to produce the finished result using the supplied input.

Your starting prompt
Write a five-rule world sheet and resolve the four test cases. Each rule must be concrete. Do not add new powers or erase the supplied cost. Label this fictional worldbuilding.

Use this complete made-up practice input:
Fictional ability: In an invented city, some adults can make a clay cup replay the last sentence spoken directly into it.
Constraints: One sentence stored at a time. A new recording replaces the old one. Only the person who recorded it can trigger playback by touching the handle. Each recording can be played once. Recording requires the speaker to remain silent for one minute afterward. The cup cannot translate or imitate a different voice.
Test cases: A different person touches the handle. The same recording is triggered twice. A second sentence is recorded before the first is played. The speaker wants a translation.
Purpose: A consistent prop for a short story, not a scientific claim.

Return the finished result. Keep it fictional and do not add claims about real people, products or events.
02

Check, correct and save

Read the response beside the original input. Count five rules and four resolved test cases. Check that replacement, recorder-only access, single playback and one-minute cost all survive. Confirm the cup never translates or impersonates another voice. If a check fails, paste the correction prompt below in the same conversation. Check the revised result yourself, then copy the version you want into your own notes or document.

Your starting prompt
Check your previous result against this original input:

Check these requirements one by one:
- Count five rules and four resolved test cases.
- Check that replacement, recorder-only access, single playback and one-minute cost all survive.
- Confirm the cup never translates or impersonates another voice.
Quote each problem, explain the smallest repair, and return a complete corrected version. If there is no problem, say which checks you applied. Do not claim that your own review proves quality or audience response.

Optional: use your own material

Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below and replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with fictional ability, limits, cost and test cases. Use material you own or may use and leave out private details. The output limits written in this prompt stay in force; change a limit here too if you want a different one. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of written result with your new material. Check it against this new input and these limits, not the sample’s names or numbers. If it differs, describe the exact mismatch and ask for a complete correction before saving.

Your starting prompt
Make a five-rule fictional world sheet from my supplied ability, limits and cost below. Resolve every supplied test case using those rules. Keep rules concrete, preserve the cost and do not invent extra powers. If my facts conflict, flag the conflict instead of hiding it.

If an essential detail is missing or two requirements conflict, ask me before filling the gap.

Optional: improve the result

Stress-test an unknown edge case

Distinguish established rules from choices you still need to make. Keep the first version so you can compare the change. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.

Advanced prompt
Test a broken handle, two people speaking at once, and a sentence recorded during the required minute of silence. Mark which outcomes follow from the current sheet and which need an author decision. Offer two consistent options for each unresolved case.
Use the original input and result in this conversation. If either is missing, ask me to paste it before continuing.
Show, then try

See the shape of the result.

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input
Made-up example for practice. All people, places and events are invented.

Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.

The intended result

Illustrative output
Worked example written for this guide; it is not a recording of an AI run.

Fictional worldbuilding: the speaking cup

1. Storage: A clay cup can hold one sentence spoken directly into it. A later recorded sentence replaces the stored sentence.
2. Playback: Only the person who recorded the stored sentence can trigger it, by touching the handle.
3. Single use: After one playback, the stored sentence is gone; touching the handle again produces silence until a new recording is made.
4. Cost: After recording a sentence, the speaker must remain silent for one minute. This cost applies even if that recording is later replaced without being played.
5. Fidelity: Playback repeats the recorded sentence in the recording speaker's voice. It neither translates words nor imitates someone else.

Test cases:
- Another person touches the handle: no playback; the stored sentence remains available to its recorder.
- The same recording is triggered twice: the first authorized touch plays it; the second produces silence.
- A second sentence is recorded before the first is played: the first is replaced and cannot be recovered from the cup; the second has its own silence cost and one playback.
- The speaker wants a translation: the cup cannot provide one. The speaker would have to supply translated words themselves as a new recording.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • A convenient exception can undo the entire story conflict. Require any proposed exception to name the rule it changes.
  • Unspecified behavior is not automatically allowed. Mark new edge cases as author decisions instead of silently inventing answers.
