Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Open a chat and paste the example

Open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Copy every line under Input in this guide into the message box. Then add the prompt below (the instructions telling the assistant what to do) and send both together. Expect a written response shaped like the example under Output. The wording may differ. If the assistant asks for information already in the input, point to that line; if a necessary fact is missing, keep it unknown rather than guessing.

Your starting prompt
Draft a warm, plain thank-you note under 65 words using only the complete Eli/Rowan brief above. Mention both the lent guide and the handwritten kestrel-page note, and use the supplied effect on the walk. Add no gift, invitation, future promise or new feeling. Show the recipient and mark it Draft; do not send.
02

Check the specific result

Read the note aloud for tone. Check that it mentions the guide and the handwritten page note, that it uses only the supplied effect on the walk, and that it adds no promise. Count words to confirm fewer than 65. Compare it with the Input yourself. If the response fails a check, paste the correction prompt below into the same chat. Recheck the corrected version before saving it.

Your starting prompt
Check the draft against the original brief. Remove any new promise, gift, invitation or unsupported feeling. Keep the two specific acts of help and the supplied effect, and provide a revised note under 65 words.
03

Try it with your own example

Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below, then replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with your own non-sensitive facts and rules. Include the kinds of details listed under Requirements. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of result as this guide, using your values. Compare every name, number and rule with your input. If something differs, point to the exact mismatch and ask for a corrected complete answer. Save only a version you have checked.

Your starting prompt
Draft a warm, plain thank-you note using only my recipient, specific help and its effect below. Respect my word limit and tone. Add no gift, invitation, future promise or feeling that I did not supply. Show the recipient and label the result Draft. Do not send it.

Use only the new input below. If a fact needed to finish is missing, ask me for it before choosing an answer.

Optional: improve the result

Make it more concise without losing the detail

Ask for a shorter version and compare what survives. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.

Advanced prompt
Rewrite the draft in no more than 30 words. Preserve the kestrel-page detail and the fact it made the walk more interesting. Keep it warm and plain, with no new promise or invitation.
Show, then try

See the shape of the result.

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input
Made-up example for practice.

Made-up personal note from adult Eli to adult Rowan. Rowan lent Eli a field guide for a weekend walk and tucked in a handwritten note identifying the page about kestrels. Eli used that page during the walk and says it made the outing more interesting. The guide has already been returned. Desired tone: warm and plain, under 65 words. Eli wants to express appreciation but has not approved a gift, another outing or any future promise. Draft only; do not send.

Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.

The intended result

Illustrative output
Written example for practice; not a recorded AI response.

Draft to Rowan from Eli
“Thanks for lending me the field guide, Rowan, and for the note pointing me to the kestrel page. I used it on the walk, and it made the outing more interesting. I really appreciated that thoughtful extra touch.”
The message is 38 words when counting space-separated words. It includes the specific help and its supplied effect, with no future promise or suggestion that the book is still borrowed. Nothing has been sent.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • Generic praise can sound less personal than a simple specific detail. Use the detail the sender actually supplied.
  • Do not add feelings or a promise of repayment just because they sound polite.
