Two ink rust

Original authored teaching file. Actual digital checks are scoped separately; no consumer AI, reader, rehearsal or physical print trial is claimed.

Not tool-tested. Review and adapt before using it for a real project.

Original six-shape illustration with rust rectangle, circle and triangle, and blue rectangle, circle and triangle. The blue rectangle covers the lower-right corner of the rust rectangle. Four matching plus markers sit outside the art near the canvas corners.

Source files to work with

Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Open the original and request actual layers

Download and open two-ink-source.svg in a permitted vector viewer; also open its PNG preview. Start a new chat in a text assistant you already have permission to use and paste the complete prompt below. Its exact geometry supports a pasted-text route. If your tool accepts SVG uploads, you may upload the authorized source too and confirm it can inspect it. Expect two complete layer SVGs, a composite and the ledger. If only text-source output is supported, copy each entire SVG into a plain UTF-8 editor and save as the matching .svg filename, not .svg.txt. Open the saved files in a permitted SVG renderer and export previews through its existing export control. If actual file saving or rendering is unavailable, stop at a blocked draft; do not claim the separation is complete.

Your starting prompt
Produce all requested editable files or complete safe SVG sources and a full ledger for this exact original geometry. Do not claim a physical print proof.

ORIGINAL TWO-COLOUR VECTOR EXERCISE
Canvas: exactly 120 × 80 drawing-coordinate units, viewBox 0 0 120 80, x right and y down. These are coordinate units, not certified physical print dimensions. No crop, scaling, translation, opacity or geometry change. The original file two-ink-source.svg contains the following six owned shapes, no registration marks yet.
Rust colour for this authored sample: #B54D2E.
R1 rust rectangle: x=10,y=10,width=30,height=20.
R2 rust circle: cx=75,cy=25,r=10.
R3 rust triangle: (20,55),(35,70),(5,70).
Blue colour for this authored sample: #2456A6.
B1 blue rectangle: x=30,y=20,width=25,height=15.
B2 blue circle: cx=90,cy=55,r=12.
B3 blue triangle: (55,45),(65,65),(45,65).
Blue is painted after rust, on top at overlaps. Preserve full source shapes in their layers, including the rust rectangle under the blue rectangle; do not cut away the overlap. This is ordinary opaque SVG compositing, not a physical overprint setting or colour-separation specification for a particular press.
The union of art bounds is x5–102, y10–70. Add four matching plus-shaped registration markers in both layer files, centered at (3,3),(117,3),(3,77),(117,77). Each arm extends 1.5 coordinate units from its center, with 0.4-unit stroke width and butt ends. Include stroke extents when checking bounds. Markers must stay inside the unchanged canvas and outside the art bounds. Use the layer's own colour for its marks.

DELIVERABLE
Two complete single-colour SVG layers, rust and blue, on identical transparent 120 × 80 canvases; one composite SVG with rust first and blue last; actual rendered previews; a six-row shape-to-layer ledger; and a registration-coordinate check. Retain stable shape IDs. No background shape in either layer, scripts, external resources, filters, masks, remote fonts or embedded images. A text description alone is not the promised file. Physical printing, registration tolerances, ink mixing, trapping and overprint are not tested.
02

Overlay, check, save and reopen

Open each actual layer separately: each should show only its one colour, three source shapes and four markers on a transparent canvas. Overlay both at the same unchanged canvas origin, with blue above rust, and compare with the original and composite. Apply the sample-only checks below. If an ID, coordinate, canvas or marker is wrong, quote the mismatch and request complete corrected layers, composite and ledger. Save reviewed SVGs under new names without overwriting the original, close and reopen them, then repeat the overlay. Inspect actual rendered previews too. Keep any physical proof pending.

Your starting prompt
Audit the actual layer SVGs, composite and ledger against the original sample source. Independently enumerate all six source shapes and exact attributes; check assignment, duplicate/missing IDs, identical canvases, all registration paths/stroke extents and rust-before-blue opaque paint order. Confirm no white background or geometry clipping is baked into either layer. Return complete corrected replacements if needed. Separate digital evidence from unperformed printing, colour and overprint checks.
03

Use your own original vector artwork

Start a new chat. Replace every bracketed field below with your own exact authorized source and instructions. If uploading actual artwork, confirm it can be inspected; if not, paste complete vector geometry with IDs, not a visual guess. Request actual files, open them, overlay without resizing, and inspect each source shape. Save corrected copies separately and reopen them. Unknown colours, overlap rules or registration bounds need your decision before final separation.

Your starting prompt
Separate MY INPUT into two aligned single-colour SVG layers, a combined SVG/actual preview and a complete shape-to-layer ledger. Preserve all original geometry and IDs, including portions hidden by overlap. Follow my canvas, colour and paint-order rules exactly. Return safe complete SVG source if downloads are unsupported, and explicitly require it to be saved, opened and rendered before calling files complete.

MY INPUT
Owned vector file or complete shape geometry with IDs: [replace]
Exact canvas dimensions, viewBox, coordinate units and origin: [replace]
Two colour values and each shape's intended layer: [replace]
Overlap order and whether shapes must remain intact: [replace]
Registration marker design, coordinates, stroke width and permitted bounds: [replace]
Requested export format and intended screen/physical use: [replace]

Do not use practice sizes, counts or colours. Ask for missing essentials or conflicts. Do not infer a press's ink, trapping, overprint or colour profile settings. Keep identical canvases and origins; do not crop each export to its objects. No scripts, external resources, embedded raster artwork or opaque background unless I explicitly supply that requirement. Check every ID/attribute and marker footprint against the original, then recompose in my paint order. Return completed files, unknowns and a blank future physical-proof checklist where relevant. If I find a mismatch, return complete corrected files and ledger. Do not publish, send, print or overwrite the source.
Optional: improve the result

Inspect the overlap before requesting a print proof

Return to the original sample chat, or paste its complete Input and checked Output again. This optional sample analysis concerns the supplied opaque SVG model only; it does not change the production files or imply ink overprinting.

Advanced prompt
For the original two-colour sample, calculate the intersection of R1 and B1 and identify which original shape remains present but hidden in the composite. Explain why retaining that entire shape matters when separating layers. Prepare blank questions for the intended printer about physical scale, registration tolerance, trapping and overprint. Do not invent a printer response or convert the sample into a press-ready claim.
Show, then try

The intended result

Illustrative output
Authored digital separation example, not a consumer-AI execution, press proof or physical printing result.

ACTUAL FILES AND CANVAS
The original two-ink-source.svg is unchanged. two-ink-rust.svg contains exactly R1–R3 plus rust registration marks. two-ink-blue.svg contains exactly B1–B3 plus blue registration marks. two-ink-composite.svg places the rust groups first and the blue groups afterward. Every file uses width=120, height=80 and viewBox=0 0 120 80, with no transform or opaque background. The SVG canvases remain transparent. Matching PNGs are explicitly white-backed screen previews; they are not separation masters or colour proofs.

SIX-SHAPE LEDGER
R1 | rust #B54D2E | rectangle x10,y10,width30,height20
R2 | rust #B54D2E | circle cx75,cy25,r10
R3 | rust #B54D2E | triangle (20,55),(35,70),(5,70)
B1 | blue #2456A6 | rectangle x30,y20,width25,height15
B2 | blue #2456A6 | circle cx90,cy55,r12
B3 | blue #2456A6 | triangle (55,45),(65,65),(45,65)
The complete rust R1 is retained behind B1. Their overlap is x30–40,y20–30: 100 square coordinate units. The composite shows that region blue because blue is painted last. The other source shapes do not overlap. This digital paint-order result does not predict transparent ink interaction on paper.

REGISTRATION
Both layers have the same four plus-marker centers: (3,3),(117,3),(3,77),(117,77). Each marker has horizontal and vertical arms of half-length 1.5 and stroke width 0.4. Conservative bounds including stroke are center ±1.7, so the nearest lower-left marker envelope is x1.3–4.7,y75.3–78.7; all marker envelopes stay inside 0–120 by 0–80 and outside art bounds x5–102,y10–70. Matching marks in the composite lie on top of each other; blue is visible last. Markers are registration references, not extra artwork rows.

DIGITAL CHECK AND PHYSICAL LIMIT
The actual SVG shapes are compared against the independently enumerated source geometry, not just against a matching ledger. Each ID appears once in its assigned layer and once in the composite. The exact opaque recomposition order, single-colour paint values, transparency, matching canvases and all marker paths are checked. Actual SVGs were rendered and PNGs opened at intrinsic and 320-pixel widths. The tiny 120 × 80 preview is a coordinate-scale screen view; enlarge the SVG for close inspection. No photograph or product screenshot is used.
Overlay the actual layer files without resizing, aligning canvas origins at (0,0). Compare every source shape and the rectangular overlap with the composite. Before any real print use, have the intended print workflow establish physical size, registration tolerance, ink/trapping/overprint settings and a paper proof. The blank proof card records nothing as passed. No physical print, ink match, print-shop compatibility or time saving is claimed.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • Exporting each layer to its content bounds destroys common canvas registration.
  • Deleting the hidden part of a shape changes the supplied source and prevents faithful recomposition.
  • A white-backed PNG is not a transparent single-ink vector layer.
  • Digital blue-on-top compositing does not test transparent ink mixing, trapping or physical print registration.
