Put dated notes in order without inventing when things happened

Separate exact dates, date ranges and event pairs whose order is still unknown.

What you’re working towards

A source-linked chronology with exact dates, bounded intervals and unresolved ordering kept distinct. This is an authored practice example; no consumer AI run has been recorded.

Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Try the complete example

Open a new chat in a text AI assistant you already have permission to use. Paste all of Input from this guide, then the prompt below, in one message. Do not paste Output: that is the illustrative answer for comparison. Expect a written result that will separate exact dates, date ranges and event pairs whose order is still unknown. Different wording is fine; the source facts and rules must agree.

Your starting prompt
Reconstruct a source-linked partial chronology from all four notes. List exact dates, derive any bounded interval under the stated date convention, enumerate known before/after relationships and preserve unresolved pairs. Do not assign a date to the review or treat the order of note IDs as event order.

Use only the complete synthetic input pasted above. Return the finished written result. Keep missing facts unknown. Do not send, publish, order or change another service.
02

Trace the answer back to the source

Compare the answer with Input yourself. All four note IDs are represented; N2 retains the possible dates 6, 7 and 8 October 2026. The exact anchors remain 5 October, 7 October and 9 October. N2 is after N1 and before N4, but its relationship to N3 remains unresolved, including a possible same-date case. If a check fails, paste: “This part is wrong: [quote it]. My source says: [quote the exact line]. Return the complete corrected result and explain the change.” Recheck before saving; if the source itself is incomplete, keep that part unresolved.

Your starting prompt
Audit the result against the source pasted in this chat. Check these specific points:
- All four note IDs are represented; N2 retains the possible dates 6, 7 and 8 October 2026.
- The exact anchors remain 5 October, 7 October and 9 October.
- N2 is after N1 and before N4, but its relationship to N3 remains unresolved, including a possible same-date case.
Show each mismatch and return a complete corrected replacement. Distinguish your text audit from checks that only a person or the actual application can perform.
03

Use your own input

For your own version, open a new chat. Paste the prompt below after replacing every bracketed field. Replace related IDs, quantities, dates, rules and limits together; none of the practice facts carries over. Expect the same named deliverable using your source. Review it yourself: check each asserted before/after relation against a source or a necessary date consequence; retain pairs whose order is unknown. If a check fails, paste: “This part is wrong: [quote it]. My source says: [quote the exact line]. Return the complete corrected result and explain the change.” Recheck before saving; if the source itself is incomplete, keep that part unresolved.

Your starting prompt
Reconstruct a partial chronology from my complete dated notes and source IDs. Use only supplied anchors, clock basis, date precision and relative-date rules. Separate exact dates, bounded intervals, conflicting statements and unresolved order pairs. Derive necessary before/after relationships but do not force uncertain events into a total order or infer event dates from message timestamps.

MY INPUT
Complete notes with source IDs: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Known date anchors and clock basis: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Allowed relative-date interpretation: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Unknown or conflicting dates: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]

Use only MY INPUT for facts and constraints. Ask for an essential missing fact or conflicting rule before deciding; do not import practice-example names or numbers. Return the complete result plus unresolved questions and a source-based check list. Do not send, publish, buy, schedule or change another service.
Optional: improve the result

Add one new dated source

Resolve only the uncertainty covered by the new evidence. This optional extension uses only the synthetic example. Return to the sample chat, or paste its full Input into a new chat first. Do not transfer the changed sample values to your own input.

Advanced prompt
For this sample only, add N5: “The review occurred on 2026-10-08,” supplied as an authoritative clarification of N2 by the fictional note owner. Return the revised chronology and change log. Check it fits N2’s original interval, and state which previously unknown ordering is now resolved. Do not invent times.
Show, then try

See the shape of the result.

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input
Synthetic practice input. All names, products, records and policies below are invented.

Complete fictional project notes, all using the same local calendar and year. Only dates are supplied, not times. For this exercise, “after” and “before” compare whole calendar dates and exclude the named boundary dates.
N1: Draft completed on 2026-10-05.
N2: Review occurred after the draft date and before 2026-10-09; exact date unknown.
N3: Print proof arrived on 2026-10-07.
N4: Final text approved on 2026-10-09.
There is no evidence whether the review preceded the proof, followed it or occurred on the same date. Create a source-linked chronology and known before/after relationships without forcing all events into a single exact order. Do not infer dates from today or add causation.

Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.

The intended result

Illustrative output
Illustrative answer authored for this guide; not a recorded AI response.

Exact-date anchors
2026-10-05: draft completed [N1].
2026-10-07: print proof arrived [N3].
2026-10-09: final text approved [N4].

Bounded event, kept separate from the exact-date sequence
Review [N2]: date is one of 2026-10-06, 2026-10-07 or 2026-10-08. This follows from the supplied whole-calendar-date rule: after 5 October and before 9 October excludes both boundaries. No one of those three dates is established.

Known ordering
N1 before N2, because the review is after the draft date.
N2 before N4, because review is before 9 October and final approval is dated 9 October.
N1 before N3 before N4, from the exact dates 5, 7 and 9 October.
N1 before N4 also follows from those dates.

Unresolved pair
N2 versus N3: unknown. The review may be before the proof date, on the same date, or after the proof date. If both were on 7 October, their time-of-day order would still be unknown.

Useful clarification
What source records the review date, and, if needed, its order relative to the proof’s arrival? Until that evidence is supplied, retain the range rather than placing N2 in a definite slot. This chronology describes the notes; it does not establish causal dependence or verify real events.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • A tidy sorted list can hide that one event spans several possible positions. Show ranges separately or visibly overlapping.
  • Do not assume “after 5 October” excludes the entire 5th unless the source’s date or time convention says so. Ask about precision for real notes.
  • An email sent date or file edit date is not automatically the date of the event it describes.
