Work backward from a leaving time

Build one feasible personal departure sequence with explicit duration and slack.

Illustrative resourceNot tool-testedAdults who want a practical, low-stakes way to work backward from a leaving time
What you’re working towards

Build one feasible personal departure sequence with explicit duration and slack. The worked result is a written example for practice; the AI steps have not been tested.

Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Open a chat and paste the example

Open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Copy every line under Input in this guide into the message box. Then add the prompt below (the instructions telling the assistant what to do) and send both together. Expect a written response shaped like the example under Output. The wording may differ. If the assistant asks for information already in the input, point to that line; if a necessary fact is missing, keep it unknown rather than guessing.

Your starting prompt
Work backward from the leaving time in the made-up departure input above. Make a start/end timeline with no overlapping tasks. Preserve both order rules and the full buffer. Show task minutes, total minutes and the calculated start time. Do not add travel assumptions or set an alarm.
02

Check the specific result

Add the five task durations to get 35 minutes, then add the 5-minute buffer. The start must be 07:40 and shoes must finish at 08:15. Look for gaps or overlapping intervals. Compare it with the Input yourself. If the response fails a check, paste the correction prompt below into the same chat. Recheck the corrected version before saving it.

Your starting prompt
Check every duration and ordering rule against the original input. Recalculate 35 task minutes plus 5 buffer minutes, working backward from 08:20. If anything overlaps or moves shoes away from last place, replace the timeline.
03

Try it with your own example

Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below, then replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with your own non-sensitive facts and rules. Include the kinds of details listed under Requirements. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of result as this guide, using your values. Compare every name, number and rule with your input. If something differs, point to the exact mismatch and ask for a corrected complete answer. Save only a version you have checked.

Your starting prompt
Work backward from my leaving time below. Use each supplied task duration, order rule and buffer. Make a start/end timeline without overlapping tasks unless I explicitly allow overlap. Show task minutes, total minutes and start time. If the plan cannot fit, explain the conflict. Do not add travel assumptions or set alarms.

Use only the new input below. If a fact needed to finish is missing, ask me for it before choosing an answer.

MY INPUT
[PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE]
Optional: improve the result

See what happens when breakfast runs late

Use a changed duration to calculate an earlier start, 07:35, while preserving the full buffer and the same departure time. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.

Advanced prompt
Change breakfast to 20 minutes and keep every other rule, including the 5-minute buffer and 08:20 departure. Recalculate the start. Then explain why keeping a 07:40 start would not fit.
Show, then try

See the shape of the result.

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input
Made-up example for practice.

Made-up departure plan. Leave home at 08:20. All tasks are done by one adult and cannot overlap. Breakfast takes 15 minutes; dressing takes 10; filling a water bottle takes 3; checking keys and wallet takes 2; putting on shoes takes 5. Breakfast must come before dressing. Shoes must be last. Reserve a 5-minute buffer immediately before leaving. No travel time or alarm-setting action is requested.

Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.

The intended result

Illustrative output
Written example for practice; not a recorded AI response.

Start at 07:40.
07:40–07:55: breakfast, 15 minutes.
07:55–08:05: dress, 10 minutes.
08:05–08:08: fill water bottle, 3 minutes.
08:08–08:10: check keys and wallet, 2 minutes.
08:10–08:15: put on shoes, 5 minutes.
08:15–08:20: buffer, 5 minutes.
08:20: leave.
Task time is 15 + 10 + 3 + 2 + 5 = 35 minutes. Including the buffer requires 40 minutes. The proposed start is a planning calculation; no alarm has been created.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • Optimistic durations produce an optimistic plan. Replace estimates with times you have actually observed.
  • A written timeline does not set an alarm or account for the journey after leaving.
