What you’re working towards

Calculate top-up quantities using owner-set trigger and target counts, preserving uncertain stock and incompatible item types. The worked result is a written example for practice; the AI steps have not been tested.

Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Open a chat and paste the example

Open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Copy every line under Input in this guide into the message box. Then add the prompt below (the instructions telling the assistant what to do) and send both together. Expect a written response shaped like the example under Output. The wording may differ. If the assistant asks for information already in the input, point to that line; if a necessary fact is missing, keep it unknown rather than guessing.

Your starting prompt
Apply the exact restock rule to the complete six-item list above. Show triggered top-ups, non-triggered items and unknown-count holds. Preserve the at-or-below boundary, distinguish C5 from C6 envelopes, and calculate only from known counts. Do not infer pack sizes or order supplies.
02

Check the specific result

Check the boundary carefully: paper bags and C6 envelopes both trigger at equality. The known top-ups are 4, 4 and 6, while binder clips stay unresolved and C5 envelopes stay separate. Compare it with the Input yourself. If the response fails a check, paste the correction prompt below into the same chat. Recheck the corrected version before saving it.

Your starting prompt
Reapply the at-or-below trigger to all six item types. Correct any equality error or C5/C6 merge. Recalculate target minus current only for triggered known counts and keep binder clips on hold.
03

Try it with your own example

Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below, then replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with your own non-sensitive facts and rules. Include the kinds of details listed under Requirements. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of result as this guide, using your values. Compare every name, number and rule with your input. If something differs, point to the exact mismatch and ask for a corrected complete answer. Save only a version you have checked.

Your starting prompt
Apply my exact restock rule to every item below. Separate triggered top-ups, non-triggered items and unknown-count holds. Preserve item variants and the stated boundary rule. Show each calculation from known counts, with original units. Do not invent pack sizes or order supplies.

Use only the new input below. If a fact needed to finish is missing, ask me for it before choosing an answer.

Optional: improve the result

Resolve the count-first item

Supply the missing count and update only the affected line. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.

Advanced prompt
New owner-confirmed count: binder clips = 5. Apply the original trigger and target, update its disposition and quantity, and give the revised known top-up total. Keep every other item unchanged.
Show, then try

See the shape of the result.

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input
Made-up example for practice.

Made-up household-supplies example. Rule: restock only when the current count is at or below the trigger, then top up to the target. If the count is unknown, hold for counting. Items: small paper bags, current 2, trigger 2, target 6; notepads, current 3, trigger 2, target 5; dishcloths, current 0, trigger 1, target 4; binder clips, current unknown, trigger 5, target 12; C6 envelopes, current 4, trigger 4, target 10; C5 envelopes, current 4, trigger 2, target 8. C6 and C5 are different item types. All counts refer to individual items. Make a quantity draft only; pack sizes, prices and purchases are outside scope.

Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.

The intended result

Illustrative output
Written example for practice; not a recorded AI response.

Restock quantity draft
Small paper bags: 2 is at the trigger; 6 − 2 = 4 needed.
Dishcloths: 0 is below the trigger; 4 − 0 = 4 needed.
C6 envelopes: 4 is at the trigger; 10 − 4 = 6 needed.
No restock triggered
Notepads: 3 is above 2; add 0.
C5 envelopes: 4 is above 2; add 0.
Count first
Binder clips: current quantity is unknown; do not calculate a shortfall yet.
Known top-up quantities total 4 + 4 + 6 = 14 individual items across three types. That total is not a pack count or a price. Nothing has been ordered.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • A target is not an instruction to refill every item on every review. Apply the trigger first.
  • Do not merge similar sizes or treat unknown stock as zero.
