What you’re working towards

A case-by-case meaning test for if, unless and only wording, plus an owner-reviewed unambiguous rewrite. This is an authored practice example; no consumer AI run has been recorded.

Make a start

One step at a time.

2 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Try the complete example

Open a new chat in a text AI assistant you already have permission to use. Paste all of Input from this guide, then the prompt below, in one message. Do not paste Output: that is the illustrative answer for comparison. Expect a written result that will test a short instruction against allowed, blocked and unknown cases. Different wording is fine; the source facts and rules must agree. Check it yourself: Only no/no allows use among the four known cases. A single yes blocks use; any unknown requires asking the host with no use while waiting. The rewrite adds the supplied unknown handling and does not change “both clear” into “either clear.” If a check fails, paste: “This part is wrong: [quote it]. My source says: [quote the exact line]. Return the complete corrected result and explain the change.” Recheck before saving; if the source itself is incomplete, keep that part unresolved.

Your starting prompt
Test the exact sign against the owner’s intended rule. Return all four known yes/no cases, separately cover any unknown value, and explain whether the original wording states every intended case. Propose a clearer sign while preserving the required terms. Do not infer a new permission.

Use only the complete synthetic input pasted above. Return the finished written result. Keep missing facts unknown. Do not send, publish, order or change another service.
02

Use your own input

For your own version, open a new chat. Paste the prompt below after replacing every bracketed field. Replace related IDs, quantities, dates, rules and limits together; none of the practice facts carries over. Expect the same named deliverable using your source. Review it yourself: test each condition on its own, the conditions together, and unknown values. Compare each decision with the allowed, blocked and unknown-case rules in MY INPUT. If those rules do not settle a case, leave it unresolved and ask the rule owner. If a check fails, paste: “This part is wrong: [quote it]. My source says: [quote the exact line]. Return the complete corrected result and explain the change.” Recheck before saving; if the source itself is incomplete, keep that part unresolved.

Your starting prompt
Test my exact low-stakes instruction against my intended allowed, disallowed and unknown cases. Enumerate combinations of the supplied conditions, explain any wording mismatch and propose an unambiguous rewrite for my review. Keep protected terms. If my intent or unknown-status handling is missing or contradictory, ask rather than invent a policy.

MY INPUT
Exact low-stakes instruction: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Intended allowed and disallowed cases: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Meaning of unknown answers: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Words or facts that must stay: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]

Use only MY INPUT for facts and constraints. Ask for an essential missing fact or conflicting rule before deciding; do not import practice-example names or numbers. Return the complete result plus unresolved questions and a source-based check list. Do not send, publish, buy, schedule or change another service.
Optional: improve the result

Check all nine status pairs

Test every pair including unknown, without relying on a single grouped sentence. This optional extension uses only the synthetic example. Return to the sample chat, or paste its full Input into a new chat first. Do not transfer the changed sample values to your own input.

Advanced prompt
For the synthetic sign, list the nine combinations of reserved and repainted, each taking yes, no or unknown. Give may use, do not use, or ask host and do not use while waiting, following the owner’s explicit unknown precedence. Count each outcome.
Show, then try

See the shape of the result.

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input
Synthetic practice input. All names, products, records and policies below are invented.

Fictional craft-room sign: “Use the display board unless it is reserved or being repainted.”
Owner’s intended rule: use is allowed only when reserved = no AND repainting = no. If either is yes, do not use. If either answer is unknown, ask the host and do not use while waiting; this unknown rule applies even when the other answer is yes. Keep the terms display board, reserved, repainted and host. Need the four fully known cases, an explicit unknown rule and a proposed clearer sign.

The intended result

Illustrative output
Illustrative answer authored for this guide; not a recorded AI response.

Known-case test
Reserved no; repainted no → may use. Both blocking conditions are absent.
Reserved yes; repainted no → do not use. Reservation blocks use.
Reserved no; repainted yes → do not use. Repainting blocks use.
Reserved yes; repainted yes → do not use. Both blockers apply.

Unknown cases
If either answer is unknown, do not use while waiting and ask the host. This covers no/unknown, yes/unknown, unknown/no, unknown/yes and unknown/unknown.

Wording review
For fully known yes/no cases, “unless reserved or being repainted” matches the owner’s blocking rule: either blocker is enough. The original sign does not say what to do when a status is unknown.

Proposed sign for owner review
“You may use the display board only when you know it is not reserved and is not being repainted. If either status is unknown, ask the host before using it.”

The new wording reflects the supplied intent; it is a proposed edit, not a new room policy.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • “Only if” gives a required condition; it does not necessarily command the action whenever that condition holds. Use “may” when describing permission.
  • Treating an unknown answer as no can accidentally authorize an action. Keep the owner’s uncertainty rule explicit.
