What you’re working towards

Specify a tile that a designer can repeat and check for visible seams. The worked result was written for this guide; it is not a recording of an AI run.

Make a start

One step at a time.

3 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Open a text assistant and try the example

For a concrete starter route, open https://chatgpt.com and choose New chat. Sign in if that service requires it for your access. You can also use another text assistant you already have. Copy the entire prompt below (the instructions to paste), including the sample input, into its message box and send it. No upload or image generation is needed. Expect a complete pattern brief, coordinate placement list and future proof checklist. The wording may differ from the example; the constraints should not. If it only explains the task, ask it to produce the finished result using the supplied input.

Your starting prompt
Write a text-only surface-pattern brief with a coordinate layout, edge-pair rules and a future 3-by-3 repeat review. Explain that a repeat tile is the square copied side by side. Do not produce an image or claim the pattern has been rendered.

Use this complete made-up practice input:
Design: A simple original leaf-and-flower pattern for a personal notebook cover.
Tile: A square described as 100 units wide and 100 units high. These are layout units, not physical measurements. Coordinates start at top left; x increases right and y increases down.
Motifs: One small flower centered at (50,50). One horizontal leaf crossing the left edge at (0,25), paired with an identical leaf at (100,25). One small flower crossing the top at (75,0), paired with an identical flower at (75,100).
Sizes: Leaves 20 units wide by 10 high; flowers 12 units across. Clip anything outside the square. All paired motifs must have the same color, size and orientation.
Palette: Warm cream background, dark green leaves, muted coral flowers. Flat shapes, no text, shadows or extra motifs.

Return the finished result. Keep it fictional and do not add claims about real people, products or events.
02

Check, correct and save

Read the response beside the original input. Check the opposite-edge coordinates differ by exactly 100 along the relevant direction. Verify paired motifs keep identical shape, dimensions, color and orientation. Find an explicit 3-by-3 visual proof step and no claim that it already happened. If a check fails, paste the correction prompt below in the same conversation. Check the revised result yourself, then copy the version you want into your own notes or document.

Your starting prompt
Check your previous result against this original input:

Check these requirements one by one:
- Check the opposite-edge coordinates differ by exactly 100 along the relevant direction.
- Verify paired motifs keep identical shape, dimensions, color and orientation.
- Find an explicit 3-by-3 visual proof step and no claim that it already happened.
Quote each problem, explain the smallest repair, and return a complete corrected version. If there is no problem, say which checks you applied. Do not claim that your own review proves quality or audience response.

Optional: use your own material

Open a new chat. Copy the prompt below and replace [PASTE YOUR INPUT HERE] with tile dimensions, motif shapes, positions, colors and edge-crossing rules. Use material you own or may use and leave out private details. The output limits written in this prompt stay in force; change a limit here too if you want a different one. Send the whole message. Expect the same kind of written result with your new material. Check it against this new input and these limits, not the sample’s names or numbers. If it differs, describe the exact mismatch and ask for a complete correction before saving.

Your starting prompt
Write a text-only repeating-pattern brief from my input below. Give exact coordinates and pair anything crossing an edge with an identical counterpart displaced by the tile’s width or height. Preserve size, color and orientation. If a motif crosses a corner, supply the needed copies on both axes so all four corners join. Explain the tile as a shape copied side by side. Include a future 3-by-3 repeat check; do not claim it has been rendered.

If an essential detail is missing or two requirements conflict, ask me before filling the gap.

Optional: improve the result

Plan a second density

Change spacing deliberately while protecting edge matches. Keep the first version so you can compare the change. This extension uses the worked example. Return to that example chat, or paste its input and your checked example answer into a new chat first. Do not apply its sample values unchanged to your own input.

Advanced prompt
Propose a less dense version using the same three motif arrangements but smaller leaf and flower dimensions. Keep all centers and edge-pair rules unchanged. Explain what must be checked in a new 3-by-3 proof before choosing it.
Use the original input and result in this conversation. If either is missing, ask me to paste it before continuing.

The intended result

Illustrative output
Worked example written for this guide; it is not a recording of an AI run.

Pattern brief:
Create one square repeat tile, meaning a square that will be copied side by side to form the full pattern. Describe its layout on a 100-by-100-unit grid; the units only locate shapes and do not specify print size. Use warm cream behind flat dark-green leaves and muted-coral flowers. No text, shadows or extra motifs.

Placement:
- Center flower: place a 12-unit-wide flower at x=50, y=50.
- Left/right pair: place identical horizontal leaves, each 20 units wide and 10 high, at x=0, y=25 and x=100, y=25. Their centers sit on opposite edges. Clip the parts outside the tile. The visible half on one edge must meet the matching half on the next copied tile.
- Top/bottom pair: place identical 12-unit-wide flowers at x=75, y=0 and x=75, y=100. Clip the parts outside the tile. Their visible halves must join when the tiles repeat vertically.

Pair rules:
Do not redraw paired motifs differently. Copy the same shape with identical size, color and orientation to the opposite edge. No motif crosses a corner.

Future repeat review:
Place nine copies in a 3-by-3 grid with no gaps or overlap. Inspect every internal border for mismatched leaf and flower halves. Check the center flowers repeat regularly and no edge line appears from the background. A designer must render and inspect that proof; this written layout has not produced or tested an actual image.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • Matching colors alone will not hide a seam if the shape or position differs. Copy edge motifs precisely.
  • A coordinate plan is not a print-ready file. Actual rendering, scale choice and print review remain separate.
