What you’re working towards

A cross-reference ledger showing missing targets, duplicate labels, mismatched captions and reviewed replacements without renumbering the source silently. This is an authored practice example; no consumer AI run has been recorded.

Make a start

One step at a time.

2 steps

Start with the synthetic worked example or other non-sensitive inputs. Run one prompt at a time in your chosen AI tool. Replace any bracketed placeholders with the requested material, check each reply, and supply the source or earlier outputs that step needs. Paste them again if the tool lacks that context.

Start with the synthetic example, then adapt each prompt to your task.

01

Try the complete example

Open a new chat in a text AI assistant you already have permission to use. Paste all of Input from this guide, then the prompt below, in one message. Do not paste Output: that is the illustrative answer for comparison. Expect a written result that will list every reference, its intended target and the fixes that still need review. Different wording is fine; the source facts and rules must agree. Check it yourself: Six definitions and all four reference occurrences are accounted for; Figure2 is duplicated. R1 is valid, R2 and R4 have absent targets, and R3 uses an ambiguous duplicate label. The proposed T6 relabeling and R2/R3 replacements must be reviewed together; locate the Desk display and Label detail subjects separately. If a check fails, paste: “This part is wrong: [quote it]. My source says: [quote the exact line]. Return the complete corrected result and explain the change.” Recheck before saving; if the source itself is incomplete, keep that part unresolved.

Your starting prompt
Audit the complete definitions and reference occurrences. List all definitions, identify duplicate labels and missing targets, and classify each reference by both label and intended subject. Propose an exact coordinated change list for review. Do not call a reference fixed merely because its number exists or apply renumbering.

Use only the complete synthetic input pasted above. Return the finished written result. Keep missing facts unknown. Do not send, publish, order or change another service.
02

Use your own input

For your own version, open a new chat. Paste the prompt below after replacing every bracketed field. Replace related IDs, quantities, dates, rules and limits together; none of the practice facts carries over. Expect the same named deliverable using your source. Review it yourself: locate every proposed target in your actual document and compare its subject, count every reference occurrence, and keep unresolved duplicate labels on hold. If a check fails, paste: “This part is wrong: [quote it]. My source says: [quote the exact line]. Return the complete corrected result and explain the change.” Recheck before saving; if the source itself is incomplete, keep that part unresolved.

Your starting prompt
Audit all cross-references in my complete supplied scope. Enumerate definition labels and reference occurrences with stable IDs. Detect missing and duplicate targets, then compare each intended subject with the target caption or section meaning. Propose occurrence-level edits only within my permitted scope. Hold ambiguous targets and show coordinated dependencies; never silently renumber.

MY INPUT
Complete document text with definition labels: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Every reference occurrence: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Caption/section meanings: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Permitted edits: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]
Duplicate/missing-target policy: [replace with your own complete non-sensitive details, or state unknown]

Use only MY INPUT for facts and constraints. Ask for an essential missing fact or conflicting rule before deciding; do not import practice-example names or numbers. Return the complete result plus unresolved questions and a source-based check list. Do not send, publish, buy, schedule or change another service.
Optional: improve the result

Audit the proposed repaired extract

Check the coordinated change set before anyone applies it. This optional extension uses only the synthetic example. Return to the sample chat, or paste its full Input into a new chat first. Do not transfer the changed sample values to your own input.

Advanced prompt
For the synthetic extract only, assume the owner approves the four proposed edits to T6, R2, R3 and R4. Print the complete six-definition and four-reference replacement extract, then audit every reference again. Keep the status proposed; do not edit a real document.

This input is synthetic. The output is a written illustration of the intended result, not a verified AI-tool run.

The starting point

Synthetic input
Synthetic practice input. All names, products, records and policies below are invented.

Complete synthetic label-and-reference extract; no other definitions or references exist in this exercise.
Definitions: T1 Section1 = Purpose; T2 Section2 = Method; T3 Section3 = Findings; T4 Figure1 = Wall display; T5 Figure2 = Desk display; T6 Figure2 = Label detail.
Reference occurrences with author-supplied intended subjects:
R1: “See Section2 for the method.” Intended: Method.
R2: “Figure3 shows the desk display.” Intended: Desk display.
R3: “See Figure2 for the label detail.” Intended: Label detail.
R4: “Section4 gives the findings.” Intended: Findings.
Permitted action: propose an exact occurrence-level change list for owner review. Keep duplicate labels visible in the audit. Do not silently renumber or edit the document.

Copies text only. For image or file tasks, use the source files named in the steps too.

The intended result

Illustrative output
Illustrative answer authored for this guide; not a recorded AI response.

Definition ledger
T1 Section1 → Purpose; unique.
T2 Section2 → Method; unique.
T3 Section3 → Findings; unique.
T4 Figure1 → Wall display; unique.
T5 Figure2 → Desk display; duplicate label with T6.
T6 Figure2 → Label detail; duplicate label with T5.
No Section4 or Figure3 definition exists.

Reference audit
R1: valid. Section2 uniquely leads to T2, Method, matching the intended subject. No change.
R2: broken. Figure3 has no definition. Intended Desk display is T5, but its current Figure2 label is duplicated. Hold the replacement until labels are made unique.
R3: ambiguous label. Figure2 resolves to both T5 and T6. Intended Label detail identifies T6, but readers cannot rely on the label alone.
R4: broken. Section4 does not exist. The intended Findings target is unique T3, Section3.

Proposed coordinated changes, not applied
1. Owner to approve relabeling only T6 from Figure2 to Figure3; keep T5 as Figure2.
2. With that relabeling approved, change R2 to “Figure2 shows the desk display.”
3. In the same change set, change R3 to “See Figure3 for the label detail.”
4. Change R4 to “Section3 gives the findings.”
5. Leave R1, T1–T5 and all subjects unchanged.

After applying an approved change set, locate each target by its subject, then repeat the audit on the complete document. Changing T6 alone would make the old R2 point to the wrong subject. Current document status remains unresolved; no edit has been made.

You’re the final check

Check the worked example.

These checks use the worked example and its particular facts. With your own material, check your actual names, numbers, sources and rules; do not reuse the sample’s values as the answer.

Unsaved checks stay in this tab and reset when you reload. If you choose Save guide, its current example checkmarks are kept in this browser when storage is available.

A few things to watch for.

  • Global find-and-replace can silently redirect references to the wrong figure. Track occurrence IDs and intended subjects.
  • A pasted extract can omit hidden references, captions or appendices. Audit the complete intended scope and recheck the actual document before sharing.
